Dr. Toshio Tanimoto

Dear Prospective International Students

For those international students, undergraduate and graduate, who are studying engineering and considering a term of study in Japan, we would like to invite you to consider Shonan Institute of Technology (SIT) for your educational/research needs. Here at SIT, we understand the difficulties of traveling to another country and having to adjust to that culture. It is a trying process to say the least. However, the rewards from such an experience can be extremely beneficial in launching your future career. We would like to help you navigate your way to SIT and develop the skills you will need to compete in the global market.

SIT is a small engineering university with disciplines in six areas: Mechanical Engineering; Computer Applied Design; Materials Science and Engineering; Electrical and Electronica Engineering; Information Science; and Applied Computer Science. We also have graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. Our professors are well-connected with industry throughout Japan and are involved in cutting-edge research. Our small size, easily accessible teaching staff, and “at home” educational approach guarantee that each student will get the close attention s/he needs to get a good education and succeed in the global market.

SIT also has a variety of academic and non-academic activities taking place on campus throughout the year. Engineering activities, such as the Robot Contest, Bird-Man Contest, Solar Car Race, and the Sterling Engine Race, and non-academic activities, such as the SIT Rock Festival, SIT Annual Bazaar, and the SIT Sport’s Festival, among many others, ensure a full, active campus life that not only challenges but also inspires. You will have plenty of opportunities to develop your engineering skills outside the classroom, and we guarantee that you will have no shortage of friends on campus.

In addition, our campus is ideally located just 5 minutes from one of the most popular beaches in Japan. Here you can surf, sail, swim, body board, bicycle, jog, have a picnic, play beach volleyball, read, sun bathe, and do a thousand other activities. You’ll see a variety of interesting shops and restaurants and meet countless interesting people. I’m sure that you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the beach culture that makes the Shonan area so unique in Japan. If you love the beach and the ocean, SIT is definitely the place for you.

Here at SIT, we also understand that the needs of each particular student can be very different. Whether you are an international student wanting to study at SIT for a month or a student wanting to study for a four year degree, SIT will do everything possible to help accommodate your educational needs. We believe that it is important for us to break down those barriers that make studying abroad difficult because we know that when people from around the world get together, good things happen.

For interested students, please remember to apply well in advance, as visa applications can take several months to complete. We recommend at least six months for the entire process. Also, keep in mind that SIT’s academic year begins in April with the spring semester. The spring semester continues thru July with our campus being generally closed during August. Autumn semester begins in the middle of September and continues thru January. There are no classes in February and March, but students are generally busy doing research and/or working on projects during this time.

For more information, please contact the Center for International Education and Research (CIER), kokusai@center.shonan-it.ac.jp .

Once again, we hope that you will consider SIT for your educational needs and look forward to hearing from you. Good things are just waiting to happen!

Sincerely Yours,

Dr. Toshio Tanimoto
